Care as Malign Studies - 1
Installation, sculpture, material theatre, found object
Copper wire, found paper bag, acrylic,
fabric, and iron pedestal
2017 -2018
Stemming from personal experiences with loss, hospitals, and the clinical- I use the medical gaze to reflect on the violence held in acts of care . These material studies step into the grey areas and perforate notions attached with with benign seeming ideas like repair. Care as malign studies observe forces at play and blur boundaries between making – unmaking that often lead to distortions in attempts to make perfect.
In Care As Malign Studies - 1
In a spontaneous attempt to strengthen a fraying medicine bag, I stitched it with copper – a material that is considered to have healing properties, and this further damaged the paper. The intent failed, and the copper wire's violent perforations broke it too. The pedestal of this work visually borrowed from the Ventilator machines and an incubator.
